Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return to New York is a rebalance and minor remaster to the original TMNT game released in 1989. Renowned for it’s difficulty, inconsistent gameplay, and a very overpowered Donatello, the old game manual reveals a story loosely based on the 1980’s cartoon “Shredder and Splintered,” in which the Shredder has a retromutagen gun that could turn Splinter back to human, but also the TMNT back to normal turtles.

The main goal of this game is to give each turtle a different set of abilities to encourage use of the whole team in different situations throughout the game. Some gameplay elements have been added to facilitate this. Also, the story and setting of the game has been enhanced as much as possible.

- Leonardo, as the leader, is the best all around ninja
- Raphael, the brawler, does best one-on-one vs strong enemies
- Michelangelo, with his agility, works well for crowded areas and tricky jumps
- Donatello, with his intelligence, excels in special situations and attacking from a safe distance

Notable features include:

• New stats for each turtle including attack, 1/2 health boost, speed, jumping, special weapons, and defense
• Turtles can be swapped on the fly by pressing Up/Down+Start to cycle through
• In-game save feature that saves progress on each new world map
• Almost all game text has been rewritten to reflect the characters, plot, and NYC setting
• Minor graphical changes to more closely mirror the source material
• Minor gameplay changes to increase the challenge in some areas
